MILFOIL & LAKE MANAGEMENT PLAN UPDATE

Update: The lake was treated for milfoil on June 19th.

Thank You!

First off, a big thank you to all for your generous Eurasian Water Milfoil (EWM) donations. Please keep them coming.

EWM Treament

If you haven’t heard yet, Pine Lake Property Owners Association (PLPOA) has been granted a little over $41,000 for Eurasian Water Milfoil (EWM) Treatment in 2023.  We have received a prepayment of a little over $10,000 from Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR) in April.

After getting competing bids for surveys and treatment, our milfoil committee has signed an agreement with Wisconsin Lake & Pond Resource (WLPR) to survey the lake and perform the treatment if and when we get a treatment permit from WDNR.

Before we apply

  • What we need to accomplish before we apply for a 2023 Treatment Permit:

  • Conduct a complete point survey on the west half of the lake.

  • Conduct a subset survey of heavy growth areas within the east half of the lake.

  • Create a report of what was found, where it was found and in what concentrations.

  • Submit the report and our treatment recommendations with the Permit Application to WDNR.

After Permit

What we need to accomplish after receiving a Permit to treat:

We must publish legal publication of our intent to treat the lake in a local newspaper.

We must distribute an Informational Packet to all riparian lot owners at least 15 days before treatment.

Treat the lake… hallelujah, hallelujah!

Our applicator will put required signage on each pier as they treat the lake.

Post-Treatment

Post-Treatment water samples of the lake must be accomplished in four locations at 3-hrs, 6-hrs, 9-hrs, 24-hrs and 7 days after treatment.  Water samples will be sent to a special lab in Illinois for analysis.  The water samples will be collected by Pine Lake volunteers.  This will save PLPOA $3,250.

Conduct a Post-Treatment survey in the same locations as the Pre-Treatment Survey but not sooner than 60-days after treatment.

Prepare and Submit a Final Treatment Report, with water sample analysis and treatment results to WDNR.

Timetable(ish)

Approximate Timetable:

The Pre-Treatment Survey will be accomplished late May or early June when we are sure the EWM is actively growing and will help us find as much EWM as possible for treatment.

Treatment, because of the time to get a WDNR Treatment Permit after they receive our Permit Application, will occur late June or early July.  We will try as hard as we can to treat BEFORE the Independence Day weekend.

Because we are using ProcellaCor EC as the herbicide, treatment later in growing season is not a problem like it was when we were using the 2,4-D which had to be used early in the growing season.

THERE IS NO RESTRICTION on swimming, fishing or boating immediately after the lake has been treated.

As much as we would like to have an agreed to final price to accomplish all these steps, we cannot.  The price will vary based on how much new growth of EWM we find during the Pre-Treatment survey.  The amount of ProcellaCor EC used and the labor to apply the herbicide are variable costs that we just do not know as of this writing.

We will of course keep you informed of what is going on as we move forward through all the required hoops put in front of us.
